Porcelain Crowns

A dental crown is a cap that is placed over an existing tooth in the mouth. It is applied to the tooth to restore is shape, provide more strength or enhance the tooth's appearance. When the dentist cements the permanent crown in the patient's mouth, it will cover the whole visible portion of the tooth along the gum line.

When visiting Dr. Skowronski's office for a crown procedure, two appointments are necessary. Dr. Skowronski will thoroughly discuss color options with the patient before the impression is sent to the laboratory for fabrication. At the conclusion of the first crown appointment, the patient will leave with a temporary crown on that day. It is recommended that the patient avoid sticky, hard and chewy foods during these few weeks, because the temporary crown is not permanently cemented into the patient's mouth. During the second appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and apply the permanent one with cement. The doctor will also check the fit and bite of the patient to make sure he or she is comfortable before leaving the office.

If for some reason the permanent crown comes off at any time, do not use any type of glue to reattach it. Contact your dentist immediately.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to improve the front appearance of the tooth. Veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory and bonded to the front of each tooth. They have the ability to change the color, shape or length of any tooth. Porcelain veneers resist stain better and have a light-reflecting quality that looks similar to natural teeth. Veneers are used in the following instances: discoloration, intense staining from drugs such as tetracycline, chips and breaks, uneven bite surfaces or gaps. Veneers are a simple and effective treatment option to better improve your smile.
